Class Descriptions

Balance Yoga & Wellness is grounded in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, one of the most traditional forms of yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.  Ashtanga yoga is a meditation in motion, linking breath and movement in a set series of postures.  The repetition in the practice allows the mind to grow quiet, while the sequencing of the postures progressively open the body.   Ashtanga is for all, there are no physical limitations that keep one from this practice – it is absolutely for beginners.

Mysore Style Class AdjustmentMYSORE STYLE   A method of teaching named for the hometown of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.  There is an emphasis on students developing their own self practice, which can be done anywhere or anytime.  Initially students work closely with the teacher, learning the fundamentals and the sequence.  The instructor works with each student, modifying postures or adding extra stretches based on the student’s needs. This class is open to all, and especially suited to those looking for one-on-one interactions with their teacher.

INTRODUCTION TO MYSORE STYLE   A bridge between beginners and led classes and a Mysore Style Class., where small groups of students will work on learning the Ashtanga series under the watchful guidance of the instructor.  This class is appropriate for those who have previous yoga experience and would like to learn the Ashtanga sequence, or those who have completed beginner’s series and would like a moderately structured practice with an instructor.

LED ASHTANGA/ LED VINYASA   Guided classes where students learn awareness of the connection between the breath and the body as they move in and out of postures.  Classes focus on correct breathing, alignment, activating the core muscles of the pelvis, and releasing patterns of tension in the body.  Classes appropriate for beginners as well as those wishing to refine their practice, and transition to the Mysore Style classes.

BEGINNER'S SERIES   Learn the fundamentals of the Ashtanga practice, a transformative, complete practice which emphasized the link between breath, movement, and inner awareness.  Students will learn the first part of the Primary Series, called “Yoga Chikitsa,” which is therapy for the body.  The sequence progressively opens the body and develops core strength while the breathing improves mental focus and relieves stress.  Class for beginners or those wishing to improve their yogic foundation.  Next beginner's series will start in September 2010.

VINYASA FLOW COMMUNITY CLASS (DONATION BASED)    Sun salutations followed by a combination of poses from the Ashtanga primary series and other sources. Instruction emphasizes good alignment, full breath and doing the poses attentively, deeply and non-aggressively.

PRANAYAMA   Classes scheduled as small groups email jessica@balanceyogawellness.com or call 504.234.9165. Pranayama is the use of the breath and the entire respiratory system to purify and strengthen the nerves. This leads to greater control of the senses, better capacity to handle stress, and a calm, clear, state of mind. The effects of Pranayama last throughout the day when you develop a consistent practice. This class give you the opportunity to be introduced and to practice the techniques in a supportive environment. Jessica has been directly trained by one of the only true authentic sources of Pranayama, Sri O.P. Tiwari.
