Planting roots and growing to serve the community

120 CortezBalance Yoga and Wellness is planting roots and growing up into a true wellness center. I have recently purchased a commercially zoned building in the heart of New Orleans 1/2 block off Canal St. near Carrollton Ave. This was done as a joint venture with dedicated yogi and experienced teacher Cheryl Golich, who will be my partner in this new concept. The intention is to create a space for a yogic community, dedicated to the practice of yoga and its related forms, all contributing to the building of individual and collective health. The center will offer several types of yoga, meditation, pranayama (breathwork, massage, ayurveda, and nutrition. The center has two large yoga spaces, a community lounge, kitchen, three bathrooms with showers, and will soon have a contemplative garden. This is more than just a yoga studio, but a true community space to encourage and support healthy living. We will also offer cooking classes, ayurvedic treatments, community pot luck meals, fundraisers and other events such as art openings.

December 11th starting at noon we will hold an open house and holiday pot luck lunch. We invite you to stop by, browse the space, enjoy the company of the community and have some lunch. Yoga classes will start in the space on Monday December 13th, an astrologically favorable day to initiate the center. We will start softly, with the current balance schedule. January 1 we will layer on additional offerings including vinyasa, restorative, and phoenix rising classes. We will be updating the website with the complete schedule of classes and teacher bios very soon.

It has been my personal dream to facilitate the creation of a yogic community. I tried to do this at my former location, however, the space did not lend itself to this. Owning the property allows Cheryl and I to have complete control over how the space is managed. Partnering with another yogi brings synergies from our collective areas and also expands the community.

Location. The center is located at 120 S. Cortez St., 1/2 block from Canal St., across Cortez Street from Tony Mandinas and Ruby Slipper Cafe.

Parking. At peak lunch and breakfast times Cortez Street can be congested, so we encourage you to take advantage of ample space on Canal, Cleveland, and Telemachus Streets.

Schedule & Payments. We will start with the same fall schedule, and layer on new classes January 1, 2011. Prices will not increase and all class passes will retain their validity at the new location.

Offerings. We are happy to offer many amenities, an expanded reception area, plenty of community space including a front porch, a community lounge, kitchen and library, retail space, and a garden. We are installing a reverse osmosis filter to offer purified water rather than bottled. And we are very excited about three fully functioning showers! We ask that you respect and treat our new space as you would your own home.

Service. With the expanded center, we will have opportunities for work study including housekeeping, gardening, and general maintenance. Please talk to me if you are interested.
